Thankful For Our Staff

With Thanksgiving quickly approaching, we would like to take the time to thank our entire staff. We have many employees that make it their mission every day to go above and beyond, among these employees are our hotel general managers. These two men spend countless hours training staff, assisting guests, crunching numbers, and filling in where needed. Both have very diverse and different backgrounds. Here are their stories.
James Montie, General Manager of SpringHill Suites by Marriott
Growing up as a young boy near Green Bay, Wisconsin, he dreamt of playing in the NFL for the Packers. As a teenager, his goal was to become a radio DJ. Today, 31-year-old James Montie finds himself in the most unlikely of places: the newest general manager of SpringHill Suites by Marriott in Deadwood, South Dakota. But he wouldn’t trade it for the world.
Despite only working in hospitality for roughly five years, James has worked his way up through the ranks. “I’m fairly new to this industry, but it’s a love. It’s a passion. If you would have told me as a young kid I would be a manager of a hotel one day, I would have thought you were crazy.”
James’ favorite thing about SpringHill Suites is how unique it is. “The wavy wood walls in the lobby, the fact that all of our rooms are suites, we have the best pool in the state: It’s a great place for people to stay, especially if they aren’t familiar with the SpringHill brand.”
“In a million years, I wouldn’t have imagined that I would be managing a hotel. But hospitality has been good to me. I’m going to continue to grow, learn, and accomplish my goals. I’m excited for the future.”
Shawn Miller, General Manager of Cadillac Jack’s Hotel & Suites
Adorned in his daily colorful shirt-and-tie combination, Shawn recognizes each regular by name and treats each new guest like an old friend. His genuine spirit and quick wit are instantly felt by all who walk through the front doors of Cadillac Jack’s Gaming Resort.
Before arriving in the Black Hills, Shawn also worked in Washington (twice), South Carolina, Virginia, and New Mexico. Shawn was hired on as the Executive Housekeeper at SpringHill Suites in September 2014. Three months in, he became the Front Office Manager at SpringHill. He was promoted to the Assistant General Manager position a couple months later. In November 2016, he was promoted to General Manager of Cadillac Jack’s Hotel & Suites.
With people being Shawn’s greatest challenge during the day, he also noted that it is his favorite thing about his job. “We deal with human beings from all walks of life. I always take it from a service approach of every person through the front door is my new best friend.” He believes that every day is different with new opportunities to connect with guests, and if you just spend time talking with people you'll find that you have a lot more in common than you would think.
